On Tuesday, August 24th, LBMG helped to organize the PNE’s 1st Annual Foodie Tweetup, where 30 Vancouver-based food bloggers came together to sample some of the PNE’s tastiest treats.

Some notable bloggers came with empty stomaches, including KVOS personality Erin Ireland, host of FMA Weekly and Mijune Pack and popular blogger on FollowMeFoodie.com.

The results of the night included more than 300 hashtags of #PNEfood (the official hashtag of the event) and more than 100 retweets (RTs) and counting.

The two top trending topics in Vancouver on August 24th were #LadyGaga and #PNEfood. Being second place
to Lady Gaga is not too shabby!

Every year I looked forward to the excitement of the petting zoo, the cotton candy and the colourful sand jars that I created. These jars of sand allowed me to shine as an artist without displaying how truly terrible I am at drawing (a child once cried after I attempted a cat with face paint). After each PNE, as my sugar high wore off, I went home exhausted from a day filled with excitement and already counting down the days until the PNE next year.

For the 100th year, the PNE is celebrating 100 years of fun. It’s a great opportunity to recreate childhood memories while discovering how the PNE has changed over the years. I’m excited to see KABOOM!’s take on the 100 year history and the West Coast Lumberjack Show, where loggers carry trees that I can’t even lift. Most importantly, I’m doing my best to avoid the tantalizing deep fried smells that waft through the PNE (but I know I’ll succumb any day now).

The PNE was, and still is, about family to me. My mum is excited about Kevin Costner’s show. Trying the rides out for the first time is my sister’s challenge. My dad – he’s just glad that I’ve developed a serious fear of heights and won’t be dragging him on the rollercoaster any more!

It wasn’t that long ago the Burrards were last in the league and known as a perennial loser. A young GM and seasoned lacrosse veteran by the name of Shawn Joinson took over the team as GM, and he had a vision.  That vision took the Burrards to a new home at the Bill Copeland Arena in Burnaby with new players led by a former BC Lacrosse Association Coach of the Year in Tony Delmonico.

Four seasons later, led by former Team Canada world silver medalist Cory Siegner, the Burrards finished first in the league and are poised to take the national championship on their home turf as they prepare to host the 2010 Presidents’ Cup.  You won’t see these guys going pro, you won’t see them on cereal boxes or in ads either. What you will see  is a group of guys gut it out for the love of the game, and for most of them, one last chance to come out on top.

One can only hope that the magnificent weather we’ve been experiencing over the past few weeks will continue through August – when we’ll be celebrating the 100th Fair at the PNE. The celebration kicks off three weeks from TODAY (how did it get here so fast?!) with a one-time special event that will see 100 years of PNE magic travel along Beach Avenue in English Bay from Stanley Park to Sunset Beach.  And you thought Fireworks night was spectacular!

This parade will be unlike anything ever seen in Vancouver — paying tribute to all the special memories and highlights of the Fair’s 10 decades history. Did you know the PNE used to hold a parade downtown every year up until about 15 years ago?  If you have memories of that – multiply the entertainment by 100 and get ready to be wowed.

While the list of what has increased in price due to HST is quite long, including things such as haircuts and new homes, one of the big-ticket items not on that list is a new car.

LBMG is currently working with the New Car Dealers Association of BC to help dispel the myth that HST affects new car purchases.

HST has zero effect on the amount of tax that will be paid on a new car. The reality is that both the GST and PST, which are blended together to form the new HST, were already charged on all new vehicle purchases prior to the introduction of the blended tax. The total tax charged on a new vehicle is 12% – the same amount of tax charged prior to when HST was introduced on July 1.

Some consumers will even pay less for their vehicle under the new tax rules. The “luxury tax” of up to 3% on new cars worth more than $55,000 has been eliminated as a result of the HST introduction.

The first PNE Dream Home was won in 1934 by Leonard Frewin, a mechanic from Vancouver who was courting Emily Leitch. Emily’s father insisted that Leonard couldn’t properly provide for his daughter, so he did not support the match. As fate would have it, Leonard attended the 1934 PNE on the last day of the Fair, where he purchased a Dream Home ticket for 10 cents. He heard his name announced as then-called ‘PNE Dream Home’ winner while listening to the radio that night. He then went to Emily’s house and proposed on the spot.
